CyberMACS Joint Integration Week & Cultural Orientation Week 2024
The CyberMACS Consortium is thrilled to announce the two transformative programs in Istanbul, hosted by Kadir Has University (KHAS): the CyberMACS Cultural Orientation Week (September 02-05, 2024) and the CyberMACS Joint Integration Week (September 09-13, 2024). These back-to-back events aimed to foster collaboration, cultural exchange, and innovation in cybersecurity education and research.
CyberMACS Cultural Orientation Week 2024
Bridging Academia and Culture
The CyberMACS Cultural Orientation Week, held from September 2 to 5, was organized to introduce international students to Istanbul’s vibrant cultural and academic life. The week began with a welcoming speech by Program Coordinator Prof. Dr. Hasan Dağ, followed by an orientation session led by International Office Specialist Melis Erler, who shared practical insights about student life in Istanbul. Participants enjoyed a campus tour and ice-breaking activities like “Two Truths, One Lie,” setting a friendly and inclusive tone for the week.
On September 3rd, students explored Istanbul’s historical sites, including the Rezan Has Museum and the Cibali Tobacco Factory, guided by Ms. Seyhan and accompanied by their buddies. Visiting the Balat district allowed participants to immerse themselves in the city’s unique cultural heritage.
The week continued with intercultural training workshop led by Laura-Lynn Münch from SRH, preparing students to navigate cultural diversity in academic and social settings. This was complemented by a library information seminar and cultural workshops where students presented 3-minute pitches, encouraging vibrant cultural exchange.
The program concluded on September 5th with a full-day exploration of Istanbul’s iconic landmarks, such as the Hagia Sophia, Sultanahmet Square, and the Grand Bazaar. This immersive experience introduced students to Istanbul’s history and fostered a sense of belonging in their new academic environment.
CyberMACS Joint Integration Week 2024
Advancing Cybersecurity Innovation Through Global Collaboration
Following the Cultural Orientation Week, the CyberMACS Joint Integration Week (JIW) took place from September 9th to 13th, bringing together over 100 students, researchers, and faculty members from leading European institutions. This prestigious event was designed to enhance cybersecurity education through interactive workshops, lectures, and working group sessions, focusing on cryptography, cybersecurity management, and digital resilience.
The week kicked off with welcome speeches from Prof. Dr. Hasan Dağ, Programme Coordinator, and SRH and UKIM academic coordinators. Key talks on Digital Trust and Cybersecurity by Boro
Jakimovski (UKIM) and Computer Security and Digital Twins by Berk Canberk (Edinburgh Napier University) highlighted Day 1.
Day 2 focused on the critical role of cryptography, featuring a presentation by Assoc. Prof. Hristina Mihajloska (UKIM) and industry insights on Cyber Resilience and certification processes. A welcome party in the evening provided networking opportunities for participants.
On September 11th, Dr. Selçuk Öğrenci (KHAS) delivered a session on Academic Research Methods, equipping students with essential research skills. The day also included workshops on Pen Testing techniques, focusing on SQL and NoSQL injection vulnerabilities.
Day 4 saw student working groups present their research findings on cryptography and cybersecurity management, evaluated by a panel of academic experts.
The event included on September 12th the CyberMACS Executive Board Meeting and on September 10th the Master Management Committee Meeting.
The two-week program, conducted in English, was open to CyberMACS students and faculty from the Coordinating Institution, Kadir Has University, and partner institutions, SRH University of Applied Sciences (Germany) and the University of Ss. Cyril and Methodius (North Macedonia). Participants had the unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience with the latest trends in cybersecurity while engaging in meaningful cultural exchanges.
Both the Cultural Orientation Week and Joint Integration Week exemplify CyberMACS’ commitment to fostering a vibrant community of cybersecurity experts. These events enrich the participants’ academic journeys and strengthen the bonds between European institutions, advancing cybersecurity innovation and cultural understanding.
